I was a celebrity, but my life was a mess. For more than thirty-three years, I was addicted to alcohol and trapped in illicit relationships. No one and no power could stop me from drinking. As a husband and father, I failed in my duties, and my wife attempted suicide twice because of the pain my choices caused.
I had been an atheist, known at university for my revolutionary Marxist ideas. After earning my degree, I worked as a public officer at the Ministry of Health. After 11 years, I resigned from that job to start a new career in the Film Industry. However, I soon realised that my decision was not a good one. I became a well-known film and television director in Sri Lanka, but success only hid the chaos of my personal life. I enjoyed the pleasures of fame and led a deeply sinful life.
When loneliness and despair ruled me, I began to notice something different in my family: a new peace and strength in my wife and children. My wife, who had often been ill, recovered and became active and healthy. They encouraged me to commit my life to Jesus, but I resisted.

Then one day, a nerve in my eye ruptured. The doctor warned that if I continued drinking, I would lose my vision. I knew this was my last warning. Desperate and helpless, At this point the name of Jesus came to my mind again. It was Jesus who had brought peace to my family . In prayer, I talked to Jesus not asking him to heal my eye but to set me free from my drinking problem.
In 2005, I experienced a real change. Jesus gave me the resolve and courage to stop drinking completely. From that moment, I dedicated my life to Him. I believed that Jesus’ death on the cross paid the penalty for my sins, and in prayer I asked for forgiveness. I was set free from my decadent lifestyle.
I remain in the film industry, but I will never return to that sinful life. I have learned that even when surrounded by people with bad habits, it is possible to live a clean life. My source of strength is Jesus, who gives me the power to live purely. By God’s grace, I now serve the Kingdom of God as a pastor, living in peace and sharing hope with others.
